Time&Place | The Belle Vue Studio

A group of men pose together, solemn and serious in suits and ties, pens and briefcases carefully displayed.

The photograph of these Bradford mill workers was taken in the 1950s to send back to their families in the Asian subcontinent, carrying with it the all-important message of wealth and success.

This picture – part of an extraordinary collection which includes 17,000 glass plate negatives saved from the Belle Vue Studio – is the starting point for Time & Place, telling the story of British Asians from the early community to the present day.

Filmed and directed by Tim Smith.
