I want to forget the whole thing, you know, but then again, what you really want to forget, you remember best. But in the event the whole thing were to start all over again, if my country were to need me again, then I'd join up again, no doubt...I'm not sure what makes people act this way. It's all because of the war. It's because I've already killed people, I think. But death doesn't scare me anymore. If you've got to die, then you've got to die.' After the war, Ben fought in the Indonesian War of Independence (Indonesian National Revolution).

BELGIUM - A portrait of Eddy Merckx wearing one of the original cycling tops that he wore when he raced for Team Molteni in the 1970s. He might also have won in 1975 if he hadn't been punched by a spectator on the Puy de Dome and broken a cheekbone in a crash. Even so, Merckx still managed to come second. A true "Flandrien", he was also a winner of many of the one-day classics including two Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) and three Paris-Roubaix races. He continues to hold the record for most career victories by a professional cyclist with 525 victories out of 1582 starts, an incredible 33% win rate. Merckx was nicknamed "the cannibal" because he refused to ride tactically, preferring to go flat out at all times. He won races by riding away from the opposition, breaking away unexpectedly early and winning races alone.

I couldn't do anything constructive with that hatred; there was no way to vent it. Therefore it was better to be resigned.'

A few unpleasant things, sure, but I've always tried to imagine what we would have done if we had been the victors and we had had to deal with them, what would I have done in their place?' After the war, Willem returned to the Netherlands and became the director of a travel agency. He comments, 'During those years I had the feeling, "We'll just have to endure this for a while, but our time will come and then we'll settle our score with you." But when the war was over and done with, I had so many different things on my mind that I've not gotten around to getting excited a

He recalls, 'We got sick and there was no medicine, and many of us died, especially from malaria. Of the 500, maybe 100 survived. I lost my father and my brother. They disappeared and never returned...After six months, only six of the 13 men from my village were left alive. That's when we fled, together. That was dangerous, but so was staying.' After the war, he worked as a farmer and a fisherman but retired about two years ago. He comments, 'I find it very important to talk about this, for other people have to hear about this. Particularly teachers, so that they may tell about this part of history.'

BELGIUM - A portrait of Alberic "Briek" Schotte (1919 - 2004), a Belgian professional cyclist known as the greatest of his generation. He was never the most stylish of riders, but he had incredible stamina. His endurance earned him the nickname 'Iron Briek' and a reputation as one of the true hard men of cycling. Briek was twice World Champion (in 1948 and 1950) and finished second in the epic 1948 Tour de France. His speciality was competing in the classic one-day races over the cobbles of Northern France and Flanders. He won the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) in 1942 and 1948, the Paris-Tours in 1946 and 1947 and the Paris-Brussels race in 1946 and 1952. If you got beaten with that truncheon it would remove your skin when bouncing back and that caused a lot of pain.' Dulrahman now works as a farmer and owns just over an acre of land.
