Believing that Shukria had brought shame to the family, Shukria's father broke her hand and then, pulling out a pistol, threatened to shoot her. Shukria's whole family took turns at beating her. Her brother tied a rope around her neck while repeatedly hitting her and then her father tried to drown her. After a failed suicide attempt, Shukria managed to flee her home. She was taken in by a female doctor who forced her to do manual labour around her home. Fearing that she would be caught with Shukria, the doctor eventually dropped her at the Aurat Shelter where she has been cared for since.

Nussarat's village and family have since ordered her to be killed and human rights groups and politicians have refused and resisted her attempts to seek justice. Nussarat has since remained in hiding with her husband, moving across the Punjab from one hotel to the next, and lives in constant fear. Until recently, rape cases in Pakistan fell under the "Hudood Ordinance" and were dealt with in the Sharia (Islamic) Courts. Four Muslim male witnesses were required to prosecute; otherwise the victim risked being imprisoned for adultery. A recent amendment has paved the way for rape cases to now be tried in civil courts.
