The Island

Ian Teh

Ian Teh sallies forth on a journey around the coastline of Britain.~This project is a road trip around the coastal regions of England, Wales and Scotland, which together make up an island that is the largest in Europe and the ninth largest in the world. My intention is to explore aspects of Britain's identity by circumnavigating her coastline. These pictures are from the first journeys on the trip. ~I have never really felt I had explored Britain enough despite having grown up here, so this journey is as much a personal one, an opportunity to explore my home, as it is one looking at the country whose identity has in no small way been defined throughout history by its geography as an island.

I started at Southend-on-Sea in Essex and travelled north along the coast visiting towns and cities dotted along the seafront, all the way up to Great Yarmouth in Suffolk. Many of these places are seaside resorts that were built up in the 19th century. Today, the Victorian model is still going strong despite the cheap flights that take Britons far from home. These resorts retain their historic character but thrown into the mix is a somewhat kitsch commercialism that reflects the contemporary face of the British seaside.
