After the War: Libyan Cityscapes

Mads Nissen

Having covered the Libyan revolution in 2011 as it unfolded, Mads Nissen went back to the scenes of some of the most intense fighting to see what had changed.~~Mads Nissen about his return to Libya, one year after the revolution:~'In 2011, I covered the war in Libya. I wanted to document the extreme emotions that I witnessed - the pain of loss, the self-sacrifice on the frontline, the anxiety at home. The hatred, the hope. Everywhere I looked, I sensed that things were breaking apart; that the country was in a state of rupture. With my pictures, I tried to convey this to the readers back home.~~'A year later, I revisited the desert country, this time in a very different mood.

'Everything was different now. Gaddafi was dead, the war was over (or so they claimed), and in the streets the sounds of shooting and crying were no longer heard.~ ~'It was silent in Libya, a silence dense with anticipation.~~'I walked around the deserted ruins of Tripoli, Misrata and Sirte. A doomsday scene with scattered fragments of previous everyday existence. Ghost towns with scars - even in the asphalt - where ancient symbols of power and powerlessness had lost value. Silent, quivering, explosive.'~
