Summer holidays in Poland

Wladyslawowo, Poland 01-02 August 2020. © Kacper Kowalski / Panos Pictures

The latest series of images by Polish aerial photographer Kacper Kowalski is shot from his gyrocopter. This photograph was taken last weekend in Wladyslawowo, a small tourist town on the Baltic Sea, where Covid-19 doesn’t appear to have dampened these holidaymakers’ desire to go to the beach. This beach is a cult place and usually one of the most crowded in Poland – this year is no different than previous years.

As the corona virus pandemic continues to sweep across the world, Latin America has become a new hotspot in the spread of the disease according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Brazil has seen the largest number of infections, second only to the United States.

Lalo de Almeida has been documenting the devastating effect the health crisis is having on a country whose poorer citizens were already reeling from years of recession and economic crisis.

Thailand Bucks the Trend – Adam Dean

Though it was the first country to record a case of coronavirus outside China in January 2020, Thailand has consistently bucked the trend during the developing pandemic. It is unclear whether there is one dominant reason why this has been the case but as of mid July the country had reported a mere 3,240 cases and 58 deaths, while no new cases of local transmission had been registered for the past seven weeks.

Click HERE to watch the conversation between Panos photographer Nora Lorek and Panos director Adrian Evans.

Nora Lorek’s work is rooted in migration, culture and human rights. Born in Germany in 1992, she has lived in Gothenburg, Sweden, since 2005. In recent years she has been focusing on projects in refugee camps and informal settlements, accompanying refugees on their way across the borders of Europe and Eastern Africa. Her work has blurred the lines between journalism and activism, as she co-founded the Milaya project, a nonprofit to support South Sudanese women in their efforts to start up small businesses, after working in the Bidibidi refugee camp in Uganda for National Geographic.

In this conversation, Nora discussed photographing in the Calais jungle, her ongoing collaborations with National Geographic, the ethics and lack of diversity within the photojournalism industry, and longing for a slower, more personal approach to the subjects she covers.
