Panos photographers win Pictures of the Year (POY) awards

Three Panos photographers – Mads Nissen, Matthew Abbott and Ian Willms – have won awards at this year’s Pictures of the Year (POY) competition in the Daily Life category. The other categories will be announced in the next weeks.

New story: Quicksilver Quarries by Adam Dean

On the island of Sumbawa in central Indonesia, thousands of artisanal miners have been digging up gold in dangerous, informal mines, sunk into jungle hillsides, for generations. Working without licenses and primitive equipment, the artisanal mines are tolerated by the local authorities as they are one of the few sources of paid work in this underdeveloped part of the country.

Ian Willms in Granta Magazine

Ian Willms traced the journey of his Mennonite ancestors fleeing persecution in 1920s Russia across Europe to Canada. He followed their centuries-long journey through Europe, Russia and Siberia, photographing the places and people that had been left behind.
