In 1890, Anton Chekhov travelled across the entire Russian empire – from Moscow to the remote Pacific island of Sakhalin, which at the time was being used as a hard labour prison camp by the Tsarist authorities.

The soul of Russia should be located somewhere along the banks of its rivers – the Volga, the Neva, the Oka – since Russia’s development was so closely linked to the waterways.
